Building an online store: what to know before you start

2 min read

Technically building an online store is the easiest part today. The hard part is product information, logistics and where the first customers come from. We walk through the decisions that must be made before anyone starts developing anything.

Choosing a platform

There is no single right answer – there is a right answer for your product range and team. You can leave the technical build to us — see our web development service.

  • Up to 50 products, simple logistics → ready-made platform, fast and cheap start
  • 50–1,000 products, Estonian payments and inventory → WooCommerce or Shopify with local modules
  • Complex pricing, B2B, ERP integration → custom solution

Payments and delivery in Estonia

An Estonian buyer expects a bank link and a parcel locker. Without them a large share of carts is abandoned at the last step.

  • Bank links: Swedbank, SEB, LHV, Coop – usually via Montonio or Maksekeskus
  • Card payments and instalments
  • Parcel lockers: Omniva, DPD, Itella SmartPost
  • Clear delivery time and return terms – this is also a legal requirement

Product photos and descriptions decide the sale

The product page is your salesperson. You need at least three photos per product (overview, detail, in use), real measurements and an honest description. Copying the manufacturer's generic text means your page is a duplicate of hundreds of others for Google.

Launch budget

A realistic first online store budget in Estonia: €3,000–8,000 for build, €500–1,500 for photos and content, and at least €500 a month for the first three months of marketing. A shop without marketing is a shop without a street.

Measure from day one

Before launch, set up GA4 ecommerce events, the Meta pixel and Google Merchant Center. If you only start doing these three months later, you have lost all the history needed for learning.
